Indoor vs. Outdoor Pickleballs
The two most common types of pickleballs are those made for indoors and outdoors. Indoor pickeballs tend to be lighter and made with less holes that are larger. They are designed for tighter spaces and don’t bounce as high.
Outdoor pickleballs are usually made of thicker plastic material with more holes to help channel wind energy better. Pickleballs for outdoors use are faster off the paddle than indoor pickleballs.

What is a USAPA Approved Pickleball?
The United States of America Pickleball Association (USAPA) evaluates pickleball equipment to approve it for league play. The USAPA is the sanctioning body of pickleball and in an effort to create a fair playing environment, approves equipment that is allowed to be used.

What to look for when choosing pickleball balls
The wide range of pickleball balls available can make choosing one difficult. Here are a few things to consider before buying:
- Durability – Pickleballs should be made of a durable compressed plastic. 24-25 gram pickleballs are ideal.
- USAPA approved – Pickleballs that are USAPA approved have been evaluated and deemed acceptable to play based on USAPA standards.
- Amount of holes – Pickleballs with less holes react faster off the face of the paddle and those more react slower. The average pickleball ball has 40 holes.
- Color – Pickleball balls are available in many different colors and choosing one that is easy to see in all conditions is always best.
- Diameter – 74mm is the most common diameter of pickleball balls. Smaller of larger than 74mm might change the pace of the game completely.

Pickleball Size, Diameter, and Weight
Pickleball balls are made of plastic with evenly spaced holes throughout. Pickleballs have 40 holes in them but can vary in non-regulation play. The less holes the faster the ball will travel and more holes will cause it to slow down faster.
Pickleballs weigh on average 24 grams and a due to the lightweight, can be manipulated on windy days. Heavier pickleballs will maintain their line better in variable outdoor conditions.
The most common diameter for pickleballs is 74mm which is slightly larger than a golf ball.
Are pickleballs just small wiffle balls?
The best general description of a pickleball ball is that of a wiffle ball. Wiffle balls and pickleballs are similar in appearance, thought there are a few key differences.
Wiffle balls are larger than pickleballs. Pickleballs tent to be 1/3rd the size of a wiffle ball. The holes in a pickleball tend to be larger in relation to it’s overall size than that of a wiffle ball.
Wiffle balls can not be used to play pickleball. They are too heavy and do not meet regulation. For a backyard game, a wiffle ball may suffice.
