How to Choose a Pickleball Paddle Size (with chart)

January 20, 2024 by Marie Spentel

Learn how to choose the right pickleball paddle size for your height, age, and skill level.

Pickleball paddles come in a range of sizes, each with its own unique set of characteristics and benefits. Choosing the right size paddle can greatly impact your gameplay and overall enjoyment of the sport.

First and foremost, it’s important to understand the dimensions of a pickleball paddle. Standard paddles are typically around 7-8 inches wide and 15-17 inches long. However, there are also shorter, wider paddles known as “mid-sized” paddles, as well as longer, thinner paddles known as “oversized” paddles.

In this guide, we’ll discuss how to determine the correct size of pickleball paddles and choose one that’s right for you. If you want to see the leading paddles, be sure to check out the Nuipipo Graphite Paddle and the Amazin Aces Signature Set. And if you’re measuring your own paddle, read the measuring guide here.

Pickleball Paddle Size Chart

If you want the answer behind “what size paddle do I need,” it lies within its components: the tennis racket head, its size, and the tennis racket length.

These are the three pickleball paddle head sizes, each with specifications that will affect your performance as a player:

  • Midsize – This pickleball paddle head size is 7 inches (17.78 cm). This size is the smallest out of the three. The surface area offers less power generation but more exact sweet spot.
  • Oversized –  This pickleball paddle head size is over 8 inches (20.32). This size is the largest out of the three. It offers more power for the ball to bounce off of but has more dead space.
  • Mid-plus size – This pickleball paddle head size is 7.5 inches (19.05 cm). The mid-plus size is that “in-between” size that offers you the best of both worlds — a balance between power and control.

How to Choose a Pickleball Paddle Size: Head Size and Length

First, let’s talk about what determines a paddle’s size. The length of a paddle is measured from the top of the handle to the bottom of the paddle face. The width of a paddle is measured from one side of the paddle face to the other. Most pickleball paddles range from 15 to 17 inches in length, with the most common size being 16 inches. As for width, paddles range from 7 to 8 inches, with the most common size being 7-7/8 inches.

But why do pickleball paddles come in different sizes? The size of your paddle can affect your gameplay in a few different ways. A longer paddle provides more reach, allowing you to cover more of the court. This can be especially beneficial for players with a tall stature, or for those who like to play a defensive game. However, a longer paddle can be more unwieldy and less maneuverable, making it harder to execute quick shots.

Mid-sized Pickleball Paddles

Mid-sized paddles are a great option for players who prefer a more maneuverable paddle. These paddles allow for quick and precise movements, making them well-suited for players who rely on finesse and strategy. On the other hand, oversized paddles offer a larger sweet spot and more power, making them a good choice for players who rely on brute force to overpower their opponents.

When choosing a paddle size, it’s important to consider your playing style and personal preferences. For example, a smaller, lighter paddle may be easier to handle and control, but it may not offer as much power as a larger paddle. On the other hand, a larger paddle may be more cumbersome and difficult to maneuver, but it may provide more power and stability.

Bottom Line: Size Matters

In general, it’s best to try out a few different paddle sizes to see which one feels the most comfortable and effective. It’s also a good idea to consult with experienced players or a coach to get their advice on the best size paddle for your playing style.

In conclusion, the size of your pickleball paddle can greatly impact your gameplay and enjoyment of the sport. Consider your personal preferences and playing style when choosing a paddle size, and don’t be afraid to experiment with different sizes to find the one that works best for you.
