Franklin Pickleball Set 52742 Unpackaging
This is the Franklin Pickleball set 52742 before it was removed from the packaging. Inside are two pickleball paddles with the Franklin “Activator” logo and two bright yellow X-40 outdoor pickleballs.
Franklin 52742 Pickleball Paddles
The paddles feature a smooth face with cool digital graphics. These are 7-py wooden paddles, so the added weight in hand was immediately apparent. Granted, it’s not something to be concerned with for casual use, but compared to a composite paddle, the difference is noticeable.
The smooth paddle face and wooden surface allowed for quick volleys when tested.
Grips
The paddle grips are wrapped in a composite leather material which provides a steady grip when clasped. Even while maneuvering the paddle and flipping the wrist quickly, the grip held sufficiently. The only issue may be the longevity as the material doesn’t seem the strongest. Even so, you could always tape the grips or add more material as it wears with usage.
Franklin X-40 Pickleballs
Bottom Line
The Franklin Sports 52742 Pickleball set comes with two pickleball paddles and two pickleballs. It’s everything you need to get started playing pickleball. This budget friendly pickleball set is perfect for those wanting to see what pickleball is all about without a large investment.
The wooden paddles in this set are heavier than composite material, but for causal use this isn’t a problem. They still swing smoothly and deliver nice volleys. The edge guards and digital graphics are a nice added touch. The grips feel good in hand and provide enough cushion for comfortable play. The longevity of the grips is the only outlier but can easily be repaired or improved with tape.
The X-40 Pickleballs that come with the set are constructed well and should withstand plenty of usage without denting or collapsing. Their once piece construction insures they won’t split either. All-in-all, you really can’t go wrong with this pickleball set for an introduction into the sport of pickleball on a budget.
