Here’s a great video explaining how to set up a driveway pickleball court

Why play pickleball in your driveway?

Let’s face it, we often don’t have the time or ability to find regulation pickleball courts near us, so the next best thing is to build one yourself in your own driveway. Driveways tend to be rectangular shaped which naturally mimic standard pickleball courts, so the transition is often seamless.

Not only is playing pickleball in your driveway easy to set up, it is also convenient.  Whether it is for practice or for fun, nothing is easier than walking out your front door. You’ll have no excuses for not being able to play the game.

Steps for building a pickleball driveway court

First, identify an open space in your driveway that is approximately the size of a standard pickle court. This is a 30 by 60 feet area. If your driveway is not large enough to accommodate this, then you will need to improvise by playing on the largest area that it will allow.

Second, set the net up in the center of the driveway roughly halfway between the outer limits of the designated court area. You can use chalk or pickleball court marking kits to draw in the service and out of bounds lines as well.

How to set up a driveway pickleball court
  • Obtain a pickleball set that is specifically designed for driveways
  • Move vehicles and other obstructions in the driveway so that an approximate 30’x60′ area is clear.
  • Set up the driveway pickleball net in the middle of the court 30-feet from each back court.
  • Secure the pickleball net to the driveway if available. Make sure the net is pulled tight across the court.
  • Mark the court with chalk or driveway marking gets so lane lines are clearly evident.

Things to consider for DIY pickleball courts

When building a driveway pickleball court, you may have to adapt to many issues. These can be size limitations, grading, lighting, or even parked cars restricting play. Many driveways have steep gradings that can cause one side of the court to be significantly higher or lower than the other.

Taking into consideration all these factors before you start playing can help you develop a better game experience. Identifying them early on can make the game more enjoyable and less stressful for continued pickleball matches in your driveway.

Asphalt, Concrete, Grass, Dirt….Do driveway pickleball sets work in all of these?

Where there is a will, there is a way. Sometimes we can not choose where to play pickleball, we must adapt to what we are given. Pickleball driveway sets can be set up on almost any surface.

Grass and dirt surfaces are not ideal due to tripping and other hazards, but for at home games, it works just fine. Concrete and asphalt driveways make the best surfaces for pickleball games.

Does a driveway pickleball court need to be regulation size?

A driveway pickleball court does not need to be regulation size. The focus should be on being able to play the game and practice back and forth volleys, so regulation pickleball dimensions are not needed.

If your drive isn’t large enough to accommodate the regulation court size, you can extend it out into grass and dirt surfaces to get the full length and width. This is not ideal, but pickleball courts do not have to be all the same surface type for driveway setups.

Tips for measuring a driveway pickleball court
  • Start by measuring off a 30’x60′ court area in the largest part of the driveway. Court dimensions can be modified depending on available space.
  • Start at one end. marking it first, then walking 30-feet. This spot is the center of the court and the net will be placed here. Walk an additional 30-feet and mark the opposite end of the court.
  • Do the same for the edge of the other side of the court and then connect the outside perimeters with line chalk.
  • If you don’t have a measuring tool, one regular stride can be assumed to be 3-feet. 10 strides will be approximately 30-feet and 20 strides will be 60-feet.

Additional tips for driveway pickleball courts

Concrete driveway slabs tend to be poured in 20 by 10 ft sections. Roughly 4 of these rectangular sections combined can accommodate the size of a pickleball court. Use these measurements for a quick guide to be determine size limitations.

Concrete is a surface typically found in driveways and is tough on equipment. Expect your pickleballs and paddles to wear quickly if they tough the surface repeatedly.

Before setting up your pickleball court, identify areas that could be safety concerns such as uneven surfaces, cracks, potholes, and puddles that could cause you to trip of fall. Removing these areas from the court will cut down the chances of a sprained ankle or any other injuries.

Bottom Line

Building a pickleball court in your driveway is simple with the right tools. Usually, a pickleball net is the most important aspect, followed by a pickleball set that includes two paddles and pickleballs.

Identifying an area of your driveway that can accommodate a 30 x 60’ area is the next step and also inspecting it for uneven surfaces or safety concerns beforehand. Chalk can be used to outline services areas and out of bounds lines.

In just a matter of minutes, a pickleball court can be built in your driveway offering quick and easy practice time or just fin with the family.
